Things to see in Montenegro

The Riviera

Montenegro’s stretch of Adriatic coastline stretches for almost 300km, and includes some truly incredible beaches. Resort towns like Budva combine traditional seaside style bar and restaurant-lined promenades with more historic touches. And for something really historic, head to the port of Kotor, which has a beautiful Venetian-style town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and fantastic museums, set against some stunning natural landscapes. Dotted along the coastline are several inviting islands, waiting to be discovered. These include the exclusive Sveti Stefan, a favourite destination for the rich and famous in the 1960s.

With the area being popular with both budget and luxury travellers, there’s a wide selection of places to stay along Montenegro’s coast. Whether you prefer classic and authentic local character, or contemporary beach resorts, you’ll find the right hotel for you during a cheap holiday in Montenegro.

The Mountains

While southern Montenegro enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate, much of the north of the country has a cooler, continental climate. This is a result of the area’s mountainous terrain, being situated within the Dinaric Alps. Home to some of Southern Europe’s most impressive peaks, the nation’s tallest mountains are found in the Durmitor range, which sit near the Albanian border. Another fascinating mountain-based site is the Ostrog Monastery, built into the Ostroška Greda rock face in the 17th century.

With its rugged landscapes, adventure holidays in Montenegro are a popular way to experience the country. Among the exciting range of activities on offer are trekking, cycling and horseriding, as well as mountaineering, zip-lining and kayaking

Historic cities

Podogorica, Montenegro’s capital city, is an interesting mix of historic and modern – with old Turkish-style architecture sitting alongside recent buildings, as well as plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants. The country’s main international airport is just outside the city, although another popular option for starting a Montenegro holiday is to fly into Dubrovnik airport in Croatia, which is about half an hour’s drive from the Montenegrin border. The country’s former capital, Cetinje, is now much quieter, but is worth visiting for its historic buildings and museums.
